I agree, Brat... The historical fiction author gives us the possible Why, or simply spins a yarn about peripheral characters set against the backdrop of profound events...

I personally think there can be compemporary historical fisction. Really, it's a fictional story based on true historical events, hopefully well researched and documented. So in terms of what I think can qualify? For sure war epics. WWI WWII Korea Vietnam...not to meantion all the world stressors that had nothing to do with the US. There has been significant history in the last century.
Though on a personal level?
I prefer to read about something much older that can bring me to imagine a past era and give a bit of understanding as to why things happened and turned out the way they did. Which is where I find my romance. You can read the facts and see the dates...put together a when and what and maybe a how. But in history, many times a why is missing. The historical fiction author is giving you a perspective on the why.

I've seen stuff called historic fiction that is only a few years old. I think many folks think of historic fiction as stuff that happens "in the past." For me, it needs to be pretty darn historic. Like 5th century or back. But then, I'm a bit extreme. :-)

Just how far back in time does an author have to go to write an historic fiction? I guess another way of asking this question is just where is the dividing line between contemporary fiction and historic fiction?
