THE YEAR 1907

This will boggle your mind, I know it did mine!
The year is 1907.
One hundred years ago.
What a difference a century makes!
Here are some of the U.S. Statistics for the Year 1907:
************************************

The average life expectancy in the U.S. Was 47 years old.

Only 14 percent of the homes in the U.S. Had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

A three-minute call from Denver to New York City
Cost eleven dollars.

There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S. , and only 144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more
Heavily populated than California

With a mere 1.4 million people, California was only the 21st
Most populous state in the Union

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower !

The average wage in the U.S. Was 22 Cents per hour.

The average U.S. Worker made between $200 and $400 per year.

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year,
A dentist made $2,500 per year,
A veterinarian $1,500 per year,
And a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births in the U.S. Took place at HOME.

Ninety percent of all U.S. Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!
Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which
Were condemned in the press AND the government as "substandard."

Sugar cost four cents a pound.

Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.

Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used
Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from
Entering into their country for any reason.

Five leading causes of death in the U.S. Were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars.
Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii, and
Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet.

The population of Las Vegas , Nevada , was only 30!!!!

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea
Hadn't been invented yet.

There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

Two out of every 10 U.S. Adults couldn't read or write.

Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over
The counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists
Said, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind,
Regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian
Of health."

There were about 230 reported Murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A.!

Now I sent it to you and others all over the United States ,
Possibly the world, in a matter of just Seconds !!!!!!!!!

PASS THIS ALONG!!!!!

Just Try to imagine.....
What it may be like
In another 100 years !!!!!!!

IT STAGGERS THE MIND!

Versailles! How fun...I'll go someday...oh yes...I will....
I know how you feel! I got the itch to find out more about the life of Marie Antoinette too...
This is a non-fiction biography that seems well balanced and very readable:

Marie Antoinette: The Last Queen of France by Evelyne Lever

I found the historical fiction: The Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette: A Novel by Carolly Erickson (This I haven't read yet but it has been on my ever growing list for a while) Interesting is that Carolly Erickson also wrote a non-fiction biography (To the Scaffold: The Life of Marie Antoinette). I think it would be fun to read side by side :-)

Let's see. I haven't read these but their reviews are good.

Abundance, A Novel of Marie Antoinette by Sena Jeter Naslund (I'm quite interested in reading this one!)
The Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette: A Novel by Carolly Erickson
The Knight of Maison-Rouge: A Novel of Marie Antoinette by Alexandre Dumas, Lorenzo Carcaterra, and Julie Rose
Farewell, My Queen: A Novel by Chantal Thomas

I hope that helps.

Hi everyone

I absolutely loved Versailles palace when I went to Paris on my honemoon so i decided to watch the recent film featuring Kirsten Dunst. Of course I'm now inspired to seek out some good novels about her.

I have just found 'The Mirror Makers' by Clare Colvin at the library (it's about the court of Louis XIV - I"ll let you know if it's any good), but I can't find any based in Marie Antoinette's era so far...

any recommnedations would be appreciated :-)

thanks!!!

Oh man Alison Weir is awesome. Try The Princes in the Tower for the story of the two English princes imprisoned (and eventually killed?) by Richard III. She has her history down pat, and makes a compelling case for Richard as the murderer!

Excellent that you got a chance to meet DG. And Gerard Butler. Hmmm. He was SUCH a hunk in 300. They'd need to tone those abs down just a bit for Jamie. hahaha.

Oh Man I love all these books! The first three, Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, and Voyager were the reason I went to Scotland, lol!

I love the whole series and have them signed by DG. I heard her give a talk a few years ago near Seattle and she said the hardest part about a movie would be casting Jamie (I think so too!) but she was kind of preferential toward Gerard Butler. I could see him as Jamie (picture him in The 300, but with reddish hair). And I always thought the actress who played the Scottish queen in the movie "Elizabeth" (tell your queen not to send boys to die for England!) was the epitome of Claire.

Keira Knightly? No way. To young, too thin. Jamie loves Claire's round plump arse, after all!

I think if you have read all the books, A Breath of Snow and Ashes is definitely worth the read. It ties up all the loose ends and ends the series. I doubt there will be another book, unless it's a spinoff, like the Lord John Grey book.

Fiction is defined as "a literary work based on the imagination and not necessarily on fact." I've also heard it described as the "illusion of reality."
So the only things that really fall outside the historic fiction category would be documentaries, eye witness accounts, or other non-dramatized versions of the facts. Granted some of what is out there falls squarely into fantasy because so few historic facts are used. And that give us all the chance to really whine about it and call foul!

I think we're confusing Historical Fiction with Historical Dramas

While Elizabeth and Cleopatra have been 'Hollywoodized" do they qualify as FICTION?

Many of the films mentioned below are actually based on TRUE history...

FAVORITE Historical FILMS: TOMBSTONE, ROB ROY, BRAVEHEART, ELIZABETH. 300, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN

So...what is Historical FICTION Film?

I thought it was great.....and it was based on the comic book, which I own.

It's the Battle of Thermopylae and the events leading up to it from Leonidas of Sparta's perspective...

Visually beautiful.....it's like a comicbook on film...if you like that.

Is it historical?....well...it does borrow quotes and scenes from Herodetus' telling of this event....

I'm sure it's become a bit mythologized along the way.....

I think it sounds like a great premise...in Edward Rutherford's Sarum there is a chapter that follows the plagues arrival to Britain and it's all told through the point of view of fleas and rodents...great perception.

I'm going to pre order World Without End, definitely.

Now I am intrigued. I haven't read Pillars but now I think as soon as I am done with Labyrinth (which I also highly reccommend) I will search it out.
